Market & Local Life
A half day French immersion through local life

One of the most effective ways to improve your French is to experience everyday life as locals do. This half-day excursion focuses on one key moment of French daily culture: the weekly market.
In addition to the guided market visit, students also have the opportunity to continue their immersion independently during the week, thanks to local village shops within walking distance of the house.
The Belleville-sur-Saône farmers’ market
Guided Half-Day Excursion
Every Tuesday morning, we visit the Belleville-sur-Saône farmers’ market, a lively and authentic place where local producers and residents meet.
During this guided excursion, we:
-
do the food shopping together
-
buy ingredients for our shared lunches
-
choose the meal for Tuesday lunchtime, enjoyed retour de marché
Students are encouraged to ask questions, express preferences, and interact naturally with producers. These real-life exchanges are ideal for practicing spoken French in a meaningful and relaxed way.
Some producers already know me and are familiar with my work, which often leads to spontaneous conversations and questions for the students, a perfect opportunity to practice introductions and everyday interaction.
Why this market excursion works for French immersion
-
Real conversations with local producers
-
Everyday vocabulary linked to food and routines
-
Listening to natural, unscripted French
-
Speaking without classroom pressure
Le Fournil d'Ouroux
Independent experience within a walking distance
The Fournil d’Ouroux is the village bakery and small multi-service shop, located about 15 minutes’ walk from the house.
Students are free to go there on their own during the week to:
-
buy bread or croissants
-
have a morning coffee
-
exchange a few words with local residents
These short, informal visits are an excellent way to build confidence and integrate French naturally into daily life.
La ferme de l'épinette
Local farming and everyday French, independently experienced
La Ferme de l’Épinette is a local farm producing bread, vegetables, eggs, and flowers, following an organic, short supply-chain philosophy. It is located about 20 minutes’ walk from the house and opens on Friday evenings (4:30–7:00 pm).
Students can choose to visit independently to experience another aspect of French local life, and perhaps pick up a brioche for Saturday morning, a very French habit worth adopting.
Living the local way
While the guided excursion focuses on the market, these nearby village shops allow students to continue practicing French naturally throughout the week. Living in a region with high-quality local products is also the not-so-secret reason why food plays such an important role in our shared meals.
(Yes, good ingredients really do make all the difference.)
